In order to address the high levels of anxiety student’s with a diagnosis of ASD experience. Coaliste na Riochta has purchased a sensory controlled massage chair. The benefits of a massage chair for students with a diagnosis of ASD include:
•    Lower stress and anxiety
•    Improves focus and concentration
•    Improvements in language and behaviour
•    Sensory problems can be improved
•    Can improve attention span
•    People can become more social in their environment

Letters of support for the purchase of the chair have been received from
•    The Irish Society for Autism
•    Middletown Centre for Autism
•    Senior Psychologist with Kerry Intervention Disability Services

Funding for the chair was obtained from JP McManus, Irish Autism Society and many local businesses in Listowel. On behalf of the school Stephen Goulding, principal, wishes to thank all our sponsors for their generous support. Teachers have observed a noticeable decline is student’s stress and anxiety since the arrival of the chair which enables students to access the curriculum with a more positive mind-set. At Colaiste na Riochta we focus on the whole child and their wellbeing is an important factor in their education.

Comments from students
