LITERARY LISTOWEL ALIVE & WELL

1266

he legacy of the great writers of North Kerry such as John B. Keane & Bryan MacMahon is alive and well in Listowel through the dedicated work of the Seanchaí – Kerry Writers’ Museum in nurturing, cultivating and developing the talents of young people through its courses and programmes.

The Museum’s Autumn programme of creative writing for young people starts on Saturday September 30th where participants are encouraged to use their imaginations to create stories and poems, and above all the aim is to develop the creative spirit of young people in a fun atmosphere.  The eight week programme of classes for children aged 7 and 12 years will be directed by published author Marion Relihan who also directs creative writing classes for adults in Listowel and Ballybunion on behalf of Kerry ETB.  Places on the course are limited so booking is advisable.

In 2016 the Seanchaí – Kerry Writers’ Museum established the Chatterbooks Club for young people in conjunction with Kerry County Library, Listowel. Based on the successful U.K. programme, the aim of the Club is to help children aged 5 to 10 years to build a lifelong love of reading. At each Chatterbooks session children talk about what they are reading, take part in fun activities inspired by the best children’s books, and choose new books to take home and read. Club members are also provided with an activity pack to take home. The Museum has partnered with Maria Leahy who established ‘The Crafty Bookworm’ in North Kerry in 2013, in facilitating the Club.

The Seanchaí Chatterbooks Club will commence its 2017/18 season on Thursday September 28th from 4.30 to 5.30pm and meetings will alternate between the Museum and Listowel Library each month.
