Willie Guiney was presented with a Certificate of Recognition by the Listowel Municipal District on Monday in acknowledgement of an extraordinary running career spanning more than four decades. The presentation was made by Cathaoirleach Cllr. Michael Leane, with the proposal brought forward by Cllr. Tom Barry.

The award recognises Willie’s remarkable achievement of completing 100 marathons and raising more than €100,000 for a wide range of charities through his lifelong commitment to hill and distance running. Willie reached his 100th marathon milestone at the Galway Marathon on 4 October 2025 and quickly followed this with his 101st at the Dublin City Marathon over the October Bank Holiday weekend.

Throughout his career, Willie has competed in many of the world’s most prestigious marathon events, including Berlin, London, Boston, New York, Chicago, and Tokyo, proudly representing both his county and his country on the international stage.

Paying tribute, Cllr. Michael Leane said Willie exemplified the values long associated with Kerry sport. “From local roads to international marathon courses, Willie has shown determination, resilience, and humility, while raising thousands of euros for charity along the way. He is a credit to his community and an inspiration to runners of all ages.”
