Songs and stories from the hearth. With Lisa Lambe.

Based on her work with the National Folklore Collection and her recent M.A in Irish Folklore, internationally acclaimed Irish folk singer Lisa Lambe has announced her new edition of her project ‘NightVisiting’, first commissioned by The National Famine Museum.

This hugely acclaimed show is coming to Teach Siamsa Finuge for one very special night on Saturday November 1st 8pm-10pm. Doors at 7.30pm

‘NightVisiting’ reconnects us to the social role that night time social house visits once played in our oral traditions and folklore, and in the preservation of our songs and stories from tender love songs, songs of marriage, loss, longing, Lisa Lambe collaborates with renowned musicians and performers to create an evening celebrating the old songs, stories and tunes from around the hearth. It almost feels as if Teach Siamsa Finuge was made for this night of folklore songs and stories.

In the west, Nightvisiting is known as ‘Bothántaíocht’ or ‘Cuairtaíocht’, in the southern counties Kerry and West Cork it is known as going ‘Scoraíochting’. In County Roscommon, it is a visit to the Rambling House.

The Night visits brought those gathered to the hearth of the rural house, and primarily played a social role for the community, to gather, to sing the old songs and tell the stories, but importantly maintained the orality and the transmission of many songs now lost or forgotten. These visits became the institution through which Gaelic, Oral, musical and dance traditions were enjoyed maintained and transmitted. It was an important part of our social society and culture, which began to fade with the electrification of Ireland in the late 1940’s when the hearth slowly gave way to the ballroom, the public house and dance hall. This project is a celebration and a reimagining of those old songs and stories, culminating in a very special night at Teach Siamsa Finuge with traditional musicians Claire Sherry, Eoghan Scott and Vincent Lynch. Not to be missed.
