Basketball Success at Pres Listowel

408

Our Junior basketball team made up of students from 2nd year have brought great excitement and joy to Presentation Listowel in recent weeks. This all began prior to the easter holidays after winning their All-Ireland playoff against Scoil Phobail Beanntraí ensuring a place in the All-Ireland quarter finals.

The Quarter finals took place on Thursday 28th April in Oblate Hall in Dublin where the opponent was Taylor’s Hill, Galway. This game was an excellent performance by our Pres girls who lead and controlled the game from start to finish. This gave Pres 42-33 win in the end. Later in the afternoon we met a strong Mount Anville side from Dublin. Despite having the lead at the end of the first quarter, we trailed by 8 at half time. A strong third quarter by our girls gave us a slender 2 point lead heading into the final quarter. This was a tense affair but our girls showed huge determination and resilience to maintain their lead to win 40-36 in a pulsating finale. The prize was a shot at All Ireland glory against Coachford College.

The team made the trip to the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght last Thursday to contest their All-Ireland final against Coachford College. Despite holding the lead for much of the game, a strong finish by Coachford who got some vital scores was enough to see them over the line. An agonizing 36-33 loss in a titanic battle. An incredible achievement by this group of girls to finish runners up in Ireland on what was a remarkably successful year. It was incredibly heartening to see these girls continuing the strong tradition of basketball at Pres Lsitowel and everyone in our school community is enormously proud and we have no doubt they will be back stronger next year.

A special mention to all our supporters on the day who travelled, made up of staff, students, and parents. The noise and colour on the day was incredible and a huge motivation to the team.
